Higher education is rapidly evolving in both basic and professional domains. Women’s education continues to be an area of focus and concern. To address this, the institution envisages academic programmes that respond to the needs of society, industry and the service sector , with a special emphasis on providing opportunities for girls.

While preparing the Perspective Plan (2022–27), attention has been given to accommodating girls in existing and new academic programmes, enhancing staff competencies, promoting research and extension activities, and strengthening extracurricular initiatives. The plan is prepared with a focus on growth, quality and employability of learners.

The Agricultural Development Trust, Baramati was established in 1971 to support the agrarian community in improving agricultural practices. The Trust initiated construction of percolation tanks, modernisation of irrigation systems and training programmes for farmers in allied areas such as poultry, dairy and processing of agricultural products. The horticulture revolution in Maharashtra is regarded as having significant roots in the Trust’s demonstration farm, which has been visited by thousands of farmers from Maharashtra and neighbouring states.

Recognising the absence of educational facilities exclusively for girls of the agrarian community in the region, the Trust started its activities in women’s education in 1990. Consequently, Shardabai Pawar College for Women was established, initially affiliated to SNDT University, and later to Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune.

The college now has 16 undergraduate departments in Arts, Commerce and Science and runs postgraduate programmes in Arts, Commerce and Science. With dedicated and qualified faculty, strong management support and adequate infrastructure, the institution has progressed steadily.

However, development is a continuous process that must be periodically reviewed and re-programmed with future perspectives. The Perspective Plan (2022–27) has been prepared keeping in view:

  • Academic growth and programme expansion
  • Changing requirements of learners and society
  • Employability and skill enhancement of students

The plan emphasises aligning current and future academic programmes with evolving needs and opportunities.

The institution has set the following broad objectives:

  • To provide good educational facilities in basic branches.
  • To provide quality residential facilities for girls.
  • To offer free educational facilities to girls who may otherwise be deprived due to financial constraints.
  • To provide facilities and programmes for the all-round development of girls.
  • To help students excel in their studies.
  • To provide facilities for skill-based education.
  • To provide facilities for postgraduate studies in selected branches.
  • To undertake programmes to enhance the employability of students.
  • To provide extension services to society.
  • To undertake research through faculty and ensure its transfer from lab to land.

  • To strive for the status of one of the best colleges in the jurisdiction of Savitribai Phule Pune University.
  • To provide high quality teaching across all programmes.
  • To design and offer additional skill-based programmes that enhance employability.
  • To inculcate the research component at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Perspective Plan has been prepared after interaction with staff, management and parents and envisages the introduction of new academic programmes and qualitative initiatives.

In line with the emerging academic and employment landscape, the institution plans to initiate the following programmes over the plan period:

  • New academic programmes in the Science faculty, including specialisations in Zoology and Economics.
  • New postgraduate programmes, particularly in Botany and English.
  • A new specialisation in Commerce at the postgraduate level, with a focus on sectors such as Banking and Finance.
  • An additional specialisation in the Home Science department (which currently has two specialisations).

While colleges affiliated to universities do not have autonomy to change the core syllabi, they can design add-on / Certificate / Career Oriented Courses (COC) to complement the formal curriculum. The institution plans to:

  • Introduce add-on / COC courses across all faculties.
  • Apply to UGC for additional COC programmes.
  • Design modules on developmental aspects in Arts and Commerce faculties.
  • Start self-financing courses in communication and soft skills / communicative establishment.
  • Enhance computer skills by starting computer-related short-term courses.
  • Design small, skill-based modules in different departments to improve employability and practical competencies.

The institution will strive to implement structured programmes for the holistic development of students, including:

  • Orientation programmes at the beginning of the academic year for first-year students.
  • Finishing courses focusing on interview techniques and professional grooming.
  • Ongoing soft skills development programmes for final-year students.
  • Study tours, industrial visits, field visits, nature tours and treks.
  • NCC / NSS camps to inculcate values of community living and social responsibility.

  • Organisation of seminars, conferences and workshops for staff and students.
  • Establishment of a Competitive Examination & Career Guidance Cell.
  • Promotion of ‘Swayamsiddha’ as a best practice for women empowerment and leadership.
