Higher education is rapidly evolving in both basic and professional domains. Women’s education continues to be an area of focus and concern. To address this, the institution envisages academic programmes that respond to the needs of society, industry and the service sector , with a special emphasis on providing opportunities for girls.
While preparing the Perspective Plan (2022–27), attention has been given to accommodating girls in existing and new academic programmes, enhancing staff competencies, promoting research and extension activities, and strengthening extracurricular initiatives. The plan is prepared with a focus on growth, quality and employability of learners.
The Agricultural Development Trust, Baramati was established in 1971 to support the agrarian community in improving agricultural practices. The Trust initiated construction of percolation tanks, modernisation of irrigation systems and training programmes for farmers in allied areas such as poultry, dairy and processing of agricultural products. The horticulture revolution in Maharashtra is regarded as having significant roots in the Trust’s demonstration farm, which has been visited by thousands of farmers from Maharashtra and neighbouring states.
Recognising the absence of educational facilities exclusively for girls of the agrarian community in the region, the Trust started its activities in women’s education in 1990. Consequently, Shardabai Pawar College for Women was established, initially affiliated to SNDT University, and later to Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune.
The college now has 16 undergraduate departments in Arts, Commerce and Science and runs postgraduate programmes in Arts, Commerce and Science. With dedicated and qualified faculty, strong management support and adequate infrastructure, the institution has progressed steadily.
