Empowering Rural Women through Quality Higher Education

In 1991, Shardabai Pawar Mahila Arts, Commerce and Science College was established under the aegis of the Agricultural Development Trust, Baramati, with a clear mission – to empower women in rural areas through access to quality higher education.

The college is affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly Pune University) and is recognized under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC. The campus spreads over 18.14 acres with a supporting built-up infrastructure of 9,320 sq. m, providing a safe, inclusive and academically vibrant environment for women students.

The college conducts unique and socially responsive activities such as pre–police recruitment training for women to enhance employability, Swayamsiddha for personality development and empowerment, and the Karmveer Mess Scheme for the welfare of economically deprived students. These initiatives reflect the institution’s commitment to holistic development beyond the classroom.

Academically, the college imparts education through seven faculties: Science, Arts, Commerce, Home Science, Computer Application, Computer Science and Vocational streams . It offers 24 Undergraduate programmes, 8 Postgraduate programmes and Ph.D. programmes in Microbiology, Botany, Psychology and Commerce.

The UGC has sanctioned ₹170 lakhs for two B.Voc programmes and ₹80 lakhs for two community college courses, strengthening the college’s focus on skill-based and employment-oriented education.

In 2020, the DBT awarded the Star College Scheme to the Departments of Botany, Chemistry and Microbiology, sanctioning ₹63 lakhs to these three departments for promoting research culture and lab upgradation.

The college has also received prestigious recognition as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by DSIR, Government of India . Further, it has been sanctioned the Star College Scheme by DBT, GoI and the PG-CURIE Scheme by DST, GoI, affirming its strong focus on research and innovation.
